In August 2024, FENGGY’s founder Ge Feng was invited to speak at the Sanmen Jacket Industry Forum: a gathering, in the Zhejiang Province county of Sanmen, of the people who make the outerwear that much of the world wears. Sanmen is one of China’s most significant centres for jacket manufacturing; the forum is where the industry’s questions about its own future get asked.
Ge Feng’s keynote was titled, in translation, “The Sustainable Development of Fashion Innovation in Original Outdoor Brands.” The frame is the forum’s, not the brand’s: FENGGY is luxury athleisure for the modern woman, there to bring a designer’s eye to an industry question. Her argument: that sustainability in fashion is not only a materials question (though it is that) but a design question. A garment that becomes many garments is a garment that resists the disposable logic of fast fashion. If one well-made modular piece replaces four single-purpose pieces, the math of consumption changes.
